You’ve called us "Old School," mocked our so-called “ancient thinking,” and laughed at our struggles to keep up with the times. But now, as the world faces a wave of resurgent racism and hate, it's time for you—this generation of so-called "thugs"—to show what you're really made of.
Racism isn’t lurking in the shadows anymore; it’s marching proudly in the streets. Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, skinheads, and hate groups are on the rise, emboldened by political climates around the world. In the face of this threat, the question is: What role will you play? Will you stay focused on tearing down your own communities, or will you rise to protect and uplift them?
The image of today’s “thug” or “gangsta” has been built on arrogance, empty displays of power, and meaningless violence. But real power—the kind that matters—isn’t found in your music videos, flashy cars, or at the strip club. Real power is about making a difference, standing for something, and defending the people you claim to love.
Think about it: the same gangs and so-called drug cartels terrorizing Black and poor neighborhoods could become forces for real change. Instead of destroying your communities, why not strengthen them? Instead of “drive-bys” in your own neighborhoods, how about organizing to protect them from the hate that’s knocking at your door?
Why not take those dollar bills you throw away at clubs and “make it rain” for your community? Feed the hungry, clothe the children, and invest in something that lasts.
Why not make music that inspires instead of destroys? Write songs about stopping the violence, about uniting against a system designed to keep you at the bottom. Your generation hasn’t had to fight for civil rights like mine did—but that doesn’t mean the fight is over.
Being a "thug" should mean more than sagging pants, getting high, or chasing symbols of wealth that have no real value. It should mean courage. It should mean leadership. It should mean stepping up when your people need you the most.
And let’s be real: pulling a trigger doesn’t make you powerful. The real power lies with those who make the guns, write the laws, and enforce the rules. If you want to claim the title of “thug,” then prove you’ve got the guts to fight for something bigger than yourself.
Protect your families. Protect your neighborhoods. Protect your mama.
Now that’s a legacy worth leaving.
